BENU Talisman – Venus Hair

Overview

Rutilated Quartz, after which this pen is designed.

This is the special edition of the BENU Talisman done exclusively for Truphae in the US. I saw it while doing my yearly dive in to the deals that happen in November and thought it was just a spot on design! I had a piece of Rutilated Quartz (Venus Hair Quartz, as it’s also known) sitting on my desk and I knew exactly what they were going for. This was also my first BENU pen, but it was enjoyable enough that I’ve acquired a few more.

I think BENU make unique looking pens and artistry is always worth something. The nibs are Schmidt nibs which are used in Traveler’s Company and Ystudio as well. This was my first experience with the nibs and I think that it’s springy and has great flow. Mine is a medium, though I do now have a few broads and they are just as fantastic.

Things of Note

The body is very lightweight which can turn some people off for feeling “cheap” but attract others for being easier to write with for long periods. I don’t mind it.

Posting is a finicky thing to do with this pen! It can be posted, and it will stay secure through all but the most aggressive writing sessions, but it is not as simple as pushing the cap on the back of the pen. It has to be slightly twisted. No telling whether or not that will scuff up the pen, but in the four months I’ve had it, I’ve not had any scuffing show up.

I inked this up with Pelikan Golden Beryl ink and, I must say I am impressed. It has never has a flow issue from the moment I inked it up. I have always been able to uncap and write. This can sometimes be a problem with shimmer inks, but not here.

There are parts of the pen, on the barrel, where one can see the ink converter’s shadow through the spaces in the resin. With a full converter of gold ink, I think it looks fab.

The grip section, which I generally have problems with, it smooth enough. But, as I’ve said, I wish every pen was smooth in that section.

My very first bottle of Pelikan ink just because it needed to go in my BENU Venus Hair Talisman. (And we should all listen to more Tears for Fears) . . . #stationeryaddict #penaddict #fountainpentok #fountainpenink #pelikanedelstein #pelikangoldenberyl #benupen

Verdict

I became a fan of BENU after purchasing this pen, I really did. I know that I went through a phase where I wanted all my pens to look as classic as possible, but I have gotten well over that, and I love the addition of fun works of art in to my collection. The most important things are all here: the pen works every time I unscrew the cap, and it feels and looks nice while I’m writing.
