Ceremonial Spiced Heated Cacao with Tamarind

Ingredients

  • cacao nibs (4-5, 1” nibs per serving)
    • I purchased some from Endorfin Foods after reading their blog and watching videos about what they are all about. Obviously, I don’t have sponsors (you are possibly the third person to ever read this post), I just like their chocolate.
  • unsweetened soy milk (I mix 1/4 cup milk with 1/4 cup water per serving)
    • almond milk is also acceptable, or oat milk. Whatever plant-based milk you fancy. But make sure it’s unsweetened.
  • coconut milk (about a quarter of a can per serving)
    • unsweetened or sweetened depending on preference.
  • medjool dates (1-2 dates per serving)
  • turmeric (the photo is for 2 servings, about 1/4 teaspoon per serving)
  • cardamom (the photo is for 2 servings, about 1/8 teaspoon per serving)
  • cinnamon (the photo is for 2 servings, about 1/4 teaspoon per serving)
  • tamarind concentrate (the photo is for 2 servings, about 1/2 teaspoon per serving)

Process

  1. Heat unsweetened soy milk over stove until almost boiling (my preference is to not let it boil).
  1. Add all ingredients to blender and blend until totally creamy.
  1. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Different spices can make this drink fit in to different days, moods, and ceremonies. Try adding one of the following:
    • chili powder e.g. African bird pepper or cayenne (sparingly)
    • black pepper
    • nutmeg and cloves
    • chamomile tisane
    • rose hip tisane (for a big vitamin C boost along with the tamarind)
  • The dates are the sweetener for this (and potentially the coconut milk depending on which type you use), but alternatives if you don’t have/want/like dates are:
    • coconut sugar
    • maple syrup
    • agave nectar
  • Make sure to mix long enough to pulverise the dates. The frothy top layer is also a nice treat. I’ll bet there’s a fancy drink making tool that could make this an even frothier experience.

-Vegan and sesame free, as always.

-Serves 2

-Best served on its own

Witchy Notes

  • The ceremony of drink preparation is a special one indeed, think on the properties of each ingredient and what they offer to your trifecta of mind, body, and soul. Pay attention to how each addition changes the smell, the colour, and the form of the drink. This is where the spices you add can really pull forth contemplation on a specific part of yourself. You can make it more warming or cooling; give it hints of self love; or make it more calming. With each sip, try to experience every single ingredient.

  1. Really nice drink! If you don’t blend it super smooth, dates will provide nice texture.
